Liam O’Brien


Liam O’Brien is a highly experienced executive with over two decades of experience in the telecommunications industry, specializing in strategy, corporate affairs, and external relations and a key member of Vodafone’s executive leadership team. Currently he serves as the Group External Affairs Strategy & Programmes Director and External Affairs Leader for EU Markets & Vodafone Investments,

Previously, Mr. O’Brien held the position of Director of External Affairs and Strategy Director (Infrastructure) for Vodafone’s European Cluster. In this role, he was instrumental in shaping the fixed market infrastructure strategy and managing Vodafone’s external relationships with key stakeholders, including media, regulators, and government entities.

Mr. O’Brien’s tenure at Vodafone Ireland as Director of Corporate Affairs and Director of Strategy & Corporate Development saw him lead critical corporate functions such as Corporate Security, Privacy, Legal Affairs, and the Vodafone Foundation. He was also responsible for corporate strategy planning and execution, with a focus on Merger & Acquisition and wholesale market opportunities.

Before joining Vodafone, Mr. O’Brien held various strategic roles at BT Ireland, including Managing Director of BT Business and Head of Strategy & Business Planning. His leadership was pivotal in driving market growth strategies and business operations across the island of Ireland.

Mr. O’Brien’s expertise extends beyond executive roles. He has served as a Non-Executive Director at SIRO, a joint venture between ESB and Vodafone, aimed at delivering high-speed broadband across Ireland. Additionally, he is a member of the National Advisory Council on Online Safety, contributing to the development of policies and initiatives to ensure online safety for all users.

Mr. O’Brien holds a deep commitment to leveraging technology for social good, as evidenced by his role as Chairperson of the Vodafone Foundation, where he spearheaded numerous community initiatives and charity partnerships.

Mr. O’Brien holds an Electronic Engineering degree and an MBA from one of Ireland’s leading business schools. He is also an IOD-certified Chartered Company Director. His extensive experience as an executive and non-executive board member position him to drive impactful outcomes.

Outside of his professional life, Mr. O’Brien is a dedicated long-distance runner, having completed 15 marathons, including 5 of the 6 World Major Marathons.
